Words come and go, but the images they give us are what we remember.

I have enjoyed letters and calligraphy since I was a child, but didn’t get the chance to study them until college. It was then that suddenly there was a world where people not only appreciated letters as art, but could actually make a living by creating words. I have been drawn to traditional letterforms because I understand their beauty and their beauty seems to understand me. Traditional letterforms evoke memories of family, from writing checks to receiving letters from friends. Impressive penmanship is present in photos of bygone days when letter writing was a regular professional activity between businesses. Beautiful letters lent formality and gravitas to life’s successes in flowering and decorated certificates and announcements. These weren’t seen as something extraordinary, but were simply a part of the day to day experience of life.

This is what speaks to me. This is what I love conveying to others. The life and love of movement in words that very well may be static on a page, yet instill emotion in people’s hearts and spirits. 

That is the power of the letterform.
